Colours are listed as they are commonly named, not as exact shades — official specifications use Pantone or CMYK values that differ between government documents, and the drawings here use representative shades. Every drawing is set at 3:2; real flags use several different ratios, and the two square flags, Switzerland and Vatican City, are noted in their rows. Designs are described in words for every flag, drawn or not.
How this list was built
The list is the 193 UN member states plus Palestine and Vatican City. That is the line most reference works draw, and drawing it explicitly is better than leaving people to wonder why a particular territory is missing. Dependencies, disputed territories and sub-national flags are not here.
Drawn where they can be drawn exactly, described where they cannot. 102 of the 195 flags here are drawn on this page as SVG, by us, from their geometry — bands, crosses, saltires, triangles, cantons, discs, serrated edges and regular stars. None is a photograph or a stock graphic. The other 93 carry a coat of arms, script, an animal, a plant, a tool, a sun with a face or a crescent, and none of those can be reproduced from geometry. An approximated flag is a wrong flag, so those keep their written description instead of a drawing that is nearly right. Where we were not confident of a shape — Bosnia and Herzegovina, Saint Lucia, Seychelles — we left it undrawn rather than guess.
Flags change, and this list says so where it matters. Syria's flag changed in 2025. Afghanistan's is contested between the current administration and missions abroad still flying the former republic's tricolour. Mauritania added red bands in 2017. A flag list that pretends the set is fixed is quietly wrong; the entries here carry the date or the dispute.
The near-identical pairs are flagged both ways. Chad and Romania, Indonesia and Monaco, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, Ireland and Cote d'Ivoire. These are the questions people actually arrive with, and each entry points at its twin instead of leaving you to notice.
Common questions
How many national flags are there?
195 on this list — the 193 UN member states plus Palestine and Vatican City. Counts elsewhere differ because they include dependencies, disputed territories or partly recognised states.
Which national flag is not a rectangle?
Nepal's, which is two stacked pennants. Switzerland's and Vatican City's are square rather than the usual rectangle, but they are still four-sided.
Which flags look almost the same?
Chad and Romania are the closest pair. Indonesia and Monaco differ only in proportions. The Netherlands and Luxembourg differ in the shade of blue, and Ireland and Cote d'Ivoire are mirror images of each other.
Why are only some of the flags drawn?
Because the rest cannot be drawn accurately from geometry. A flag made of bands, crosses, triangles, discs and stars can be reproduced exactly. A flag carrying a coat of arms, a line of script, an eagle, a cedar or a sun with a face cannot — any version we drew would be a near-miss, and a near-miss flag is simply the wrong flag. Those rows carry the written description instead, which is accurate.
Can I use this for a quiz or a geography lesson?
Yes. Turn on no-repeats and the generator works through all 195 without repeating, which is what you want for a class going round the room.
