How these lists are built

Every generator on this site is the same mechanism — pick one row at random from a list — so the only thing that makes one page better than another is the quality of the list. Here is how they are made.

The list comes first

A generator is only built once there is a real reference list to build it on: a published standard, a scientific classification, or a set of things with agreed membership. Where no such list exists, or where membership is a matter of opinion, we do not build the generator rather than invent one.

The whole list is on the page

Nothing is hidden behind the button. Every entry, with its supporting facts, is printed below the generator in a table you can read, search and check. A random picker whose pool you cannot inspect is asking to be taken on trust, and there is no reason to.

Facts are stated at the level they are known

Where a figure is exact — the atomic number of carbon, the number of continents — it is given exactly. Where it is a range or an estimate, it is given as a range and labelled. Where sources disagree, the page says so rather than picking one and presenting it as settled.

What we do not do

We do not pad lists with invented entries to make a number look bigger. We do not attribute quotes we cannot source. We do not build generators for things that change weekly, because a page that is wrong six months from now is worse than no page.

No repeats

Each generator remembers what it has already given you and will not repeat until the list is exhausted, unless you switch that off. Genuine randomness repeats more than people expect, and for picking names or assigning tasks that is usually not what you want.
