Seasons are for the temperate northern hemisphere; in the southern hemisphere shift them by six months, and in the tropics many of these flower for far longer or all year. Colours are the ones the plant actually produces, including what breeders have achieved — not colours that only exist in dyed cut flowers.

How this list was built

Dyed flowers are not colours. Blue roses and rainbow chrysanthemums in shops are white flowers that drank dye or were sprayed. The colour column lists what the plant can actually make, which is why the dahlia entry says “almost every colour but true blue” — a true blue dahlia has been chased for two centuries and has never been bred.

Where a name covers many species, the entry says which sort. There are around 25,000 orchid species, so the entry is the moth orchid, the one people actually own. The same for pelargonium, which everyone calls a geranium and which is not the hardy geranium of the garden border.

Flowering time is a season, not a date. The same plant flowers weeks apart between southern Spain and Scotland, and half a year apart between hemispheres. Any page giving you a month for a flower is guessing about where you live.

Native range, not where it is grown. Tulips are Central Asian, not Dutch; the Netherlands is where the trade is. Dahlias, marigolds and zinnias are Mexican. Knowing the origin tells you what conditions the plant actually wants, which a national association does not.

Sources. Plant types, native ranges, flowering seasons and colour ranges follow standard horticultural reference. Where a common name covers a large genus, the entry names the species or group that people usually mean by it.

Common questions

How many flowers does this pick from?

109, covering bulbs, annuals, perennials, shrubs, climbers and a few trees and water plants. All of them are in the table on this page.

Can I use this to choose what to plant?

It is a starting point. Each pick tells you the plant type, where it originates and when it flowers, which is enough to judge whether it suits your garden — but check hardiness for your own area before buying.

Why is there no blue rose or blue dahlia?

Because neither exists as a bred flower. Both are famous precisely because breeders have failed to produce them; what you see in shops is dyed or genetically modified and near-lilac.

Does it work for a name, a tattoo or a drawing prompt?

Yes. Because each pick comes with the season and the real colour range, you get enough to work from without looking the flower up separately.
